German Labour Law Bars Internal Job Applications as Working Time
German employment law expert Nathalie Oberthür clarifies that drafting a job application, even for a vacancy advertised within the same company, is not regarded as working time. Employees must prepare their applications outside of working hours, regardless of whether the position is internal or external. Oberthür, chair of the labour‑law committee of the German Bar Association (DAV), emphasizes that the rule applies uniformly and does not change based on the employer’s benefit from a successful internal hire.
