German leaders warn of rising antisemitism during Rosh Hashanah

German religious and political leaders have issued messages of support to the Jewish community during the Rosh Hashanah new year celebrations, while warning of rising antisemitism.

Heiner Wilmer, Chairman of the German Bishops' Conference, expressed concern regarding the increased burden on Jewish communities in Germany. He noted that antisemitism has become more overt in social media, political debates, and on the streets, leading to a perceived decline in security. Wilmer emphasized that Jewish life must be free and visible, stating that silence in the face of such threats is not an acceptable stance.

In Munich, Mayor Dominik Krause also extended greetings to the local Jewish community. He expressed alarm over the normalization of antisemitic narratives and a growing right-wing shift in society. Krause acknowledged the uncertainty felt by Jewish citizens regarding their future in the city and pledged that the municipal government would remain a reliable ally in the fight against all forms of antisemitism.
