German leadership faces rising productivity pressure and transformation challenges
German executives are facing significant pressure due to rapid organizational changes and productivity demands. A McKinsey study indicates that nearly 60% of leaders in Germany report constant productivity pressure, while 75% of companies feel unprepared for upcoming transformations. Additionally, data from DAK shows a 9% nationwide increase in sick leave due to mental health issues during the first half of 2026.
Experts suggest that relying solely on individual resilience is insufficient, as organizations often generate uncertainty through contradictory expectations and unclear mandates. HR expert Markus Porcher emphasizes that leaders, particularly middle managers, should not attempt to simulate absolute security or hide behind a metaphorical “suit of armor.” Instead, leadership should focus on creating spaces where employees can express doubts, fears, or frustrations to facilitate constructive dialogue.
To navigate these challenges, leaders are encouraged to develop a personal “Leadership Identity.” This involves reflecting on personal values, strengths, and biographical experiences to act authentically rather than attempting to conform to an idealized, impersonal image of leadership.
