German legal profession shows shifting trends in density and specialization

An analysis by the legal learning platform Jurafuchs reveals shifting trends within the German legal profession. Based on data from the Federal Bar Association (Bundesrechtsanwaltskammer) covering over 189,000 entries, the report highlights changes in lawyer density, specialization, and gender distribution across major cities.

Frankfurt am Main remains the primary legal hub, leading with an average of 17.07 lawyers per 1,000 inhabitants, followed by Düsseldorf and Munich. While the national average for lawyers increased by 0.6 percent, growth was highly localized. Lahr in the Black Forest saw the most significant increase at 14.5 percent, with notable gains also reported in Viersen, Nordhorn, Delmenhorst, and Ravensburg.

Conversely, lawyer numbers declined in more than half of all surveyed cities, including Neustadt an der Weinstraße. The data also indicates a shift in specializations: the number of specialists in insolvency and restructuring law has risen significantly, while those practicing in family and social law have seen a decline. Additionally, the proportion of female lawyers in Germany has increased slightly.
