German life insurers ranked in 2026 quality studies
Recent industry studies have evaluated the quality and future stability of German life insurance providers. In the 'Rating of Ratings 2026' published by Metzler Ratings GmbH, WWK emerged as the leader with a score of 1.33, followed by LV 1871 (1.45) and BL die Bayerische (1.72). The methodology aggregated publicly available data from six rating agencies, evaluating companies across product quality, service, security, and returns.
Separately, a DFSI study on corporate quality assessed 35 market-relevant providers. WWK maintained its top position, closely followed by Ergo Vorsorge. The study noted that while the current interest rate environment is more favorable for private investors than the previous low-interest period, many insurers continue to struggle with 'silent burdens.' These arise from the decreased market value of older, low-interest fixed-income securities caused by rising interest rates, which can limit investment flexibility and create liquidity risks if assets must be sold before maturity.
