German life insurers ranked in latest industry analysis
Professor Dr. Hermann Weinmann of Hochschule Ludwigshafen am Rhein has released his latest analysis of the largest German life insurance providers in the October 2026 issue of the Zeitschrift für Versicherungswesen (ZfV).
In the business perspective category, Allianz and Hannoversche received an 'A' grade. Other companies received varying scores, with Provinzial and Generali receiving a 'four', while Zürich Deutscher Herold received a 'five'. Consumer ratings mirrored the business performance for the top tier, as Allianz and Hannoversche were rated 'very good', whereas Zürich Deutscher Herold was rated 'unsatisfactory'.
The study evaluated 14 companies based on several business metrics, including investment earnings power, gross surplus margin, new business lapse losses, extended operating and administrative costs, and the development of valuation reserves. Consumer interests were assessed based on participation rates.
