German logistics industry faces infrastructure and cost crisis

Logistics companies in Germany, particularly in the Rheinland-Pfalz region, are facing significant operational challenges due to deteriorating infrastructure and environmental factors. Freight forwarders report that a combination of defective bridges, low water levels, closed railway lines, and high diesel prices is pushing the industry to its limits.

Specific bottlenecks include the total closure of the B9 federal highway in Speyer due to two defective bridges, as well as corrosion damage on the Kurt-Schumacher Bridge over the Rhine between Ludwigshafen and Mannheim. These disruptions affect major industrial hubs and companies such as BASF and Daimler Truck. Additionally, long-term construction on major routes like the A45 and A66 has forced costly detours, further increasing operational expenses for medium-sized logistics firms.
