German man arrested in Hannover train after Nazi salute

On 27 July 2026, a 37‑year‑old German passenger was observed giving the Nazi “Hitler salute” inside a regional express train at Hannover, shortly before the train departed for Braunschweig. Fellow travelers alerted Deutsche Bahn security staff, who in turn notified the Bundespolizei. The suspect, who appeared heavily intoxicated, was removed from the train.

Federal police identified an existing arrest warrant dating from 2025 for a weapons‑theft conviction that carried a €1,800 fine. Because he could not pay the fine, he was sentenced to a 60‑day substitute imprisonment. He was taken to the police station at Ernst‑August‑Platz and, two hours later, transferred to a detention facility. Investigators also opened a case for the use of symbols of unconstitutional and terrorist organisations.
