Germany manufacturing orders fall 10.6% in August

German industrial manufacturing orders experienced a sharp, unexpected decline of 10.6% in August compared to the previous month, according to data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). This drop significantly exceeded market expectations, which had anticipated only a 1% decrease.

The contraction was primarily driven by a 61.5% plunge in the 'other transport equipment' sector, which includes aircraft, ships, railways, and military vehicles. This specific category had seen a massive surge in July due to large-scale contracts, creating a high base for comparison. When these large-scale orders are excluded, the decline in manufacturing orders was a much more modest 0.1%.

On a broader scale, domestic orders fell by 17.3%, while foreign orders decreased by 5.4%. Despite the monthly volatility, the three-month comparison for the June-August period showed a slight increase of 1.3%.

In other sectors, the mechanical and plant engineering industry in Baden-Württemberg reported a different trend, with orders rising by 35% year-on-year, bolstered by demand in the artificial intelligence sector. However, experts warn of structural weaknesses and high energy costs across the wider German economy.
