German media alliance launches journalism campaign
A broad coalition of German media organizations and associations is launching a nationwide campaign from September 14 to 19, 2026, to highlight the importance of professional journalism. The initiative, titled ‘Demokratie braucht viele Stimmen’ (Democracy needs many voices), coincides with the International Day of Democracy on September 15.
The alliance includes public broadcasters such as ARD and ZDF, as well as private media entities like RTL Deutschland and ProSiebenSat.1. Participating groups also include various industry associations, such as the Bundesverband Digitalpublisher und Zeitungsverleger (BDZV) and the Verband Deutscher Lokalzeitungen und Lokalmedien (VDL).
The campaign aims to address the challenges posed by big-tech platforms and artificial intelligence, which the organizers state are changing the mechanisms of public attention and facilitating the rapid spread of unverified content. Through print, radio, television, podcasts, and digital platforms, the members plan to showcase the role of professional journalism in providing orientation, credibility, and trust in public discourse.
