German Media Institute Finds Labeling AI-Edited Images May Backfire

A study commissioned by the German Commission for Youth Media Protection and conducted by the Leibniz Institute for Media Research, Hans‑Bredow‑Institut, examined whether mandatory labeling of manipulated or AI‑generated images would protect young people from negative effects on body image. The researchers concluded that a legal labeling requirement would face significant legal and practical challenges within the existing media law framework.

Moreover, the study warns of a paradox: marked content could attract more attention, prompting deeper engagement with unrealistic beauty ideals and potentially increasing the risk of body‑image and eating‑disorder concerns among children and adolescents.

The findings suggest that labeling alone is unlikely to be an effective safeguard and may even amplify the very harms it aims to reduce.
