German Medical Association calls for broader suicide prevention

The German Medical Association (BÄK) has called for suicide prevention to be recognized as a core medical responsibility across all specialties, rather than being viewed solely as a psychiatric issue. Marking World Suicide Prevention Day, the association emphasized that doctors in various fields—including general practitioners, oncologists, pain specialists, and geriatricians—often encounter patients in crisis long before they seek psychiatric help.

Dr. Klaus Reinhardt, President of the BÄK, stated that “suicide prevention begins in the consultation room.” He noted that proactive inquiries regarding mental distress can serve as a vital bridge to specialized psychiatric and psychotherapeutic care. The association argues that recognizing warning signs and addressing suicidal ideation should be a universal medical task.

Furthermore, the BÄK expressed that current legislative drafts regarding the legal anchoring of suicide prevention are insufficient. The association is calling for stronger societal efforts and improved structural prerequisites to ensure effective and sustainable prevention measures.
