German Medical Association warns of fake doctors on social media
The German Medical Association (Bundesärztekammer) has issued a warning regarding the rise of fake doctors on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. The organization highlighted the dangers of unverified medical claims and health advice provided by influencers who lack professional licensure.
A prominent case involves Alina Walbrun, a medical student in Munich who presented herself online as ‘Doc Alina’. Despite not having medical licensure (Approbation), she amassed over 300,000 followers on Instagram, providing daily health tips and promoting a fabricated condition known as ‘post-viral nasal hypersensitivity’ through paid collaborations.
The German Medical Association noted that while professional medical regulations apply to licensed members, individuals who have completed studies but lack licensure fall outside these regulatory frameworks. The association stated that when ‘medfluencers’ present themselves as doctors without being licensed, it can have criminal implications, potentially leading to up to one year of imprisonment.
