German medical associations launch roundtable to combat abuse

Medical associations in Germany have established a roundtable to address systemic issues of power abuse and sexual harassment within clinical environments. Susanne Johna, chair of the Marburger Bund, described the situation as a structural problem often stemming from hierarchical medical structures. The abuse reportedly manifests through disrespectful tones, systematic degradation, public humiliation, and gender-based discrimination.

The initiative aims to implement a shared guiding principle for a respectful hospital culture. Key proposals include the creation of independent, confidential advisory and complaint offices, as well as transparent and easily accessible reporting channels. Advocates suggest that leadership selection processes should prioritize personnel management skills alongside medical excellence to prevent a culture of silence.

Representatives, including Christine Denk of the German Nurses Council, noted that such environments can create a culture of fear, which may indirectly impact patient safety by discouraging staff from reporting potential medical errors.
