German medical experts advocate AI for sepsis detection

On World Sepsis Day, medical experts are highlighting the critical need for improved early detection of sepsis to reduce mortality rates. In Germany, sepsis remains one of the leading causes of death, with some estimates suggesting it is linked to nearly every fifth death. Mortality rates in Germany are notably higher than in countries such as Norway, Switzerland, or Denmark.

Diagnosing sepsis is challenging because initial symptoms—such as fever, chills, and fatigue—are often non-specific and can be easily overlooked. Unlike heart attacks or strokes, which have clearer clinical indicators, sepsis symptoms can be diffuse, ranging from shortness of breath to abdominal pain. This often leads to delays in administering life-saving treatments like antibiotics and infection control.

The German Society of Surgery (DGCH) is advocating for the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to address these diagnostic gaps. Prof. Jens Werner, President of the DGCH, noted that AI excels at pattern recognition, which is essential for identifying sepsis through patient data such as body temperature, blood values, and vital signs. Pilot studies are currently testing various AI tools in clinics both in Germany and abroad to detect these patterns more reliably.
