German medical experts warn against melatonin gummy bears for children

Medical experts in Germany are issuing warnings regarding the use of melatonin-containing gummy bears and other candy-like sleep aids for children. The German Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine (DGKJ) and the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment have cautioned against the uncontrolled administration of these products.

Concerns stem from the fact that melatonin is a hormone that regulates the circadian rhythm. The candy-like appearance of these supplements increases the risk of children consuming them without medical supervision. Experts emphasize that sleep issues should be clinically evaluated before resorting to hormone-based products.

Broadly, the use of dietary supplements is rising in Germany, with studies indicating approximately 77 percent of the population consumes them regularly. While many supplements are used for psychological reassurance or perceived longevity benefits, health officials warn that excessive intake of certain substances, such as iron, can lead to organ damage. The European Union is currently working toward unified regulations to standardize dosages and resolve regulatory discrepancies across member states.
