German medieval artworks receive new research and preservation focus

New research and local preservation efforts are shedding light on significant medieval artworks in Germany.

Art technologist Dieter Köcher has published extensive findings regarding the Golden Tablet, an important high altar retable from Minden Cathedral currently housed in Berlin’s Bode-Museum. Through years of analysis of wood construction and polychromy, Köcher has corrected previous assumptions, revealing that the 13th-century work was not merely a transitional form or a modified reliquary, but a distinct evolutionary step in European altar retable history.

In Saxony-Anhalt, the Freundeskreis Horburger Madonna e. V. is working to increase public awareness of the Horburg Madonna. Created around 1250 by the Naumburg Master, the statue is considered a masterpiece of European importance. Once a medieval pilgrimage site due to legends of the statue weeping, the artwork is now being promoted by local enthusiasts to engage both religious and art history audiences.
