German migration experts doubt effectiveness of border controls

Migration experts in Germany argue that recent border checks are ineffective and largely symbolic. Winfried Kluth, chair of the Advisory Council for Integration and Migration, said, “The issue of border controls, looking at the numbers, is actually resolved,” and described their continuation as “political stubbornness.” He added that the Interior Ministry, a constitutional body responsible for the rule of law, is using the measures for symbolic politics rather than complying with court and EU Commission directives.

Researcher Hans Vorländer echoed this view, noting that the controls aim to demonstrate “control back” to the AfD and that any continuation must be justified by a specific threat. With overall migration numbers declining, he said it is difficult to argue a real danger exists.
