German Mineral Water Brands Contain Carcinogenic Chromium VI

A recent consumer‑magazine test examined 53 still mineral waters sold in Germany, including private‑label products from major retailers. Two store brands – Edeka’s “Gut & Günstig Natürliches Mineralwasser Still” and Netto’s “Naturalis Natürliches Mineralwasser Still” – were found to contain elevated levels of hexavalent chromium (Cr VI), a substance classified as carcinogenic under EU regulations. While the detected amounts do not pose an immediate health danger, regular long‑term consumption could increase risk.

The same study also detected traces of persistent chemicals such as PFAS (including trifluoroacetic acid) in many tested waters, with seven products exceeding the EU’s forthcoming 2026 drinking‑water limit. These findings come alongside broader public discussion about the health benefits of mineral water versus tap water, with German nutrition guidelines recommending roughly 1.5 L of fluid per day, adjusted for individual factors such as age, activity, and diet.
