German Motorhome Buyers Spend About Four Times More Than Caravan Owners

In Germany, motorhomes (Reisemobile) cost on average more than €120,000, while caravans are priced around €30,000, a four‑fold difference. Despite higher purchase, insurance and maintenance expenses, German campers continue to prefer motorhomes for the perceived freedom they offer. Licensing requirements also favor motorhomes: drivers with a post‑1999 Class B licence can operate most new motorhomes up to 3.5 t, while towing a caravan often requires the more expensive B96 or BE extensions.

The market reflects this bias: the Caravan Salon exhibition features roughly 166 motorhome brands compared with only about 20 caravan manufacturers. Some caravan makers have raised prices by up to 30 % without technical upgrades, yet the trend toward motorhomes persists, driven by consumer psychology rather than cost efficiency.
