Fritz Güntler apologises after withdrawing from German traffic minister post
CDU Bundestag member Fritz Güntler, a 60‑year‑old finance politician from Lower Saxony, was offered the Federal Ministry of Transport by Chancellor Friedrich Merz. He initially accepted the job but withdrew his acceptance only a few hours before the planned public announcement. Güntler said he felt overwhelmed, lacked any experience in transport policy and could not see himself reading a minister’s briefings for six months. He admitted the decision was a mistake, apologised to the chancellor and to members of his state party, and said his withdrawal had put Merz in difficulty and caused turbulence for the CDU. In response, Merz later proposed Steffen Bilger, a former state secretary in the transport ministry, as the new traffic minister candidate.
