German MP Johannes Fechner speaks on defence spending and social issues at Lahr school

Bundestag member Johannes Fechner visited the 12th‑grade class of the vocational gymnasium at the Kaufmännische Schule Lahr on the EU School Project Day 2026. He fielded questions from students on topics such as the non‑implementation of conscription, funding for the Bundeswehr, and the balance between military spending and social investment. The discussion also covered high fuel prices, the treatment of refugees with secure jobs, pension security and the new retirement‑savings depot.

Fechner stressed the need for clearer political communication and reiterated that conscription has not been reintroduced. He praised the students’ knowledge, saying, “The critical eye of the students on issues like the debt brake and international solidarity shows how politically engaged the young generation here in Lahr is.”
