German municipal candidates outline economic and climate platforms

Candidates and political groups in Germany are outlining their platforms ahead of upcoming municipal elections.

In Braunschweig, Michael Walther of the Green Party expressed opposition to the development of a new intercommunal industrial and commercial area between Braunschweig and Salzgitter. He advocated for utilizing existing potential, such as the Bahnstadt and former steelworks sites, to prevent further soil sealing. Regarding the defense industry, Walther stated he does not wish to turn Braunschweig into a defense cluster but would not categorically reject individual companies, noting that Europe must increase its defense capabilities following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In Neustadt, political organizations addressed heat protection strategies. The Green Party proposed unsealing densely built areas, increasing green spaces with shade-providing trees, and installing drinking water dispensers and cooling rooms. They also emphasized the need for a municipal heat action plan and climate-proofing schools and care facilities. The UWG highlighted their previous efforts for climate protection, such as using rainwater in public buildings and planting climate-resilient vegetation, while criticizing the lack of a tree protection ordinance in the city.
