German municipalities address parking and budget issues

In Aachen, city officials are planning to temporarily convert an unused football pitch near the VHS into a public parking area. The project, estimated to cost approximately 35,000 euros, aims to provide around 40 parking spaces to compensate for the loss of spots at Walramplatz during upcoming construction phases. While the measure is intended to be temporary and reversible, some local politicians have expressed concerns regarding the potential waste of funds if investors decide to develop the area in the near future.

In Bergisch Gladbach, the Volt/FWG faction is opposing the implementation of a costly parking guidance system in Bensberg. Citing a tight municipal budget and the need to prioritize spending in areas like youth welfare, the group argues that the 52,500 euro expenditure is unjustified. Instead, they propose establishing a third parking zone to manage traffic. Additionally, the city administration is considering increasing parking fees by 50 cents per hour to offset upcoming VAT requirements and inflation.
