German municipalities address pedestrian and cycling safety

In Sandweier, local authorities are addressing increasing tensions and dangerous situations on shared pedestrian and cycling paths. The conflict arises from the significant speed difference between pedestrians, moving at 4 to 5 km/h, and cyclists or e-scooter users, who often travel at 20 km/h or faster. Officials emphasize that under German traffic regulations (StVO), pedestrians have priority and may use the full width of the path, while cyclists are legally required to adjust their speed and show special consideration to pedestrians.

In Gelnhausen, the local voters' association ‘Bürger für Gelnhausen’ has successfully advocated for the opening of a connection between the Weiberswiesen in Roth and the riverside path. This new route provides a safer connection for students and cyclists, allowing them to reach schools without passing through industrial areas or crossing heavily trafficked main roads. The association has also suggested planting hedges near the local animal shelter to provide a visual barrier along the new path.
