German cities expand free drinking water stations amid heatwave
Several German municipalities are rolling out free drinking‑water locations to help residents cope with an ongoing heatwave. Dresden launched a publicly accessible “Kühle‑Orte” map that lists more than 50 cooling spots – museums, parks, a botanical garden and two mobile drinking‑water fountains with mist nozzles – and marks free refill stations with a blue water‑drop sticker. The initiative is financed by the EU‑backed Time2Adapt project.
Ravensburg’s city centre now hosts dozens of historic and newly installed public fountains that dispense drinking water, while shops displaying the same refill sticker allow customers to top up bottles at no cost. In Sinsheim, the council approved in December 2025 the installation of modern drinking‑water fountains at its four secondary schools, beginning with Kraichgau‑Realschule and Theodor‑Heuss‑Schule; each station cost roughly €3,000.
Wipperfürth introduced a “Notfallwasser” project in which local shops and restaurants offer free tap water, identified by blue stickers and added to the city’s cooling‑places map. Speyer doubled its Refill‑station network to more than twelve sites during periods of extreme heat. Across Germany, the free‑water Android and iOS app “Trinkwasser unterwegs” lets users locate these refill points, further encouraging sustainable hydration.
These actions aim to reduce heat‑related health risks, lower plastic‑bottle waste and provide easy access to safe drinking water for the public.
