German municipalities conduct dog censuses for tax compliance
Municipalities in Germany are conducting dog censuses to ensure tax compliance and fairness.
In Rietberg, a census is scheduled to begin on September 7. Employees from Springer Kommunale Dienste GmbH will visit households to verify that all dogs are properly registered according to local tax statutes. Residents are encouraged to register pets online or in person before the census begins to avoid potential fines.
In Dorsten, the ongoing canine registration process has been extended due to delays. Originally intended to conclude in July, the census will now continue through October 30, 2026. The initiative has already resulted in approximately 620 new dog registrations, increasing the total registered population to roughly 6,800 animals. The goal remains to ensure all dog owners are contributing to the municipal tax base.
