German municipalities coordinate efforts against oak processionary moth

Local authorities in Germany are implementing new strategies to combat the spread of the oak processionary moth, a pest whose expansion is being driven by climate change. In the Wendland region, the Lüchow-Dannenberg district, three collective municipalities, and their member communities have agreed to coordinate their pest control efforts to protect humans and animals.

A cross-disciplinary working group involving local representatives, forestry associations, and agricultural chambers will be established to manage the response. The district council has also issued a resolution calling on the state of Lower Saxony for a statewide concept and financial support.

In Rommerskirchen, the environmental committee has approved a pilot project to test the use of sheep wool as a barrier against the moth's caterpillars. The project, led by the Biological Station in Knechtsteden, will test the method on selected oak trees to evaluate its effectiveness. While some officials expressed concerns regarding the costs and whether the method provides a complete solution, the trial will proceed to determine if it can serve as a viable tool for public protection.
