German municipalities face budget deficits and tax adjustments

Several German municipalities are facing significant budgetary challenges, though with varying outcomes. In Bensheim, the 2025 fiscal year is projected to close with a deficit of approximately 3.7 million euros. This is a substantial improvement from the original estimate of 21.6 million euros. The reduction is attributed to higher-than-expected revenues, particularly an 8.5 million euro increase in trade tax due to retroactive claims, and lower expenditures in personnel and services.

In contrast, the municipality of Schwalbach is facing a looming deficit of roughly 4.9 million euros by the end of 2026, which exceeds its initial projections of 3.5 million euros. To prevent potential over-indebtedness, the local administration has proposed a retroactive increase in property tax (Grundsteuer B). The administration noted that the deficit would likely not be fully compensated through other means, suggesting that tax adjustments or the use of savings may be necessary.
