German municipalities face challenges with rook populations

Local authorities and political factions in Germany are addressing growing public dissatisfaction regarding rook populations in urban areas. In Horchheim, the CDU has submitted a motion to the local advisory board to discuss the increasing noise, pollution from droppings, and damage to crops and cherries caused by hundreds of birds.

Similarly, in Durlach, the FDP has raised concerns about bird droppings at the local train station, citing reduced quality of life and potential health risks. They have requested information regarding cleaning frequencies in the affected areas.

Environmental authorities note that rooks are protected under European and national species protection laws, which cover the birds, their eggs, and their nests. Officials state that legal hurdles for intervention or dispersal are extremely high. Because rooks are highly intelligent, traditional dispersal methods often fail to reduce populations, instead merely creating smaller, scattered colonies. Furthermore, rooks are not subject to hunting laws, limiting the options available to local municipalities.
