German municipalities head to mayoral run-off elections

In the Trier-Land association, the race is a tight contest between incumbent Michael Holstein of the Free Voters and CDU candidate Christoph Biegel. Following the first round of voting, Holstein held a narrow lead of 1.6 percentage points over Biegel. The outcome may depend on whether voters who supported the eliminated SPD candidate, Thomas Neises, turn out and which candidate they favor, noting that the local SPD association has publicly recommended supporting Biegel.
