German municipalities implement online residence registration

German municipalities Kallmünz and Finsterwalde have implemented the electronic residence registration (eWA) service, allowing citizens to register their primary residence online.

In Kallmünz, the service is available through the administrative community's citizen service portal. Residents moving within Germany can complete the process for free without visiting the town hall, provided they have an ID card or eID with an activated online function, a smartphone with NFC, and the AusweisApp. The process requires uploading a landlord's confirmation for rental properties and allows for the joint registration of spouses and minor children.

Finsterwalde has also integrated the digital service, which is directly linked to municipal specialist software. The system allows for the complete digital registration of a primary residence, with the official registration confirmation provided as a PDF. Additionally, users can update address data on identity cards or passports through the same online procedure via wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de.
