German municipalities observe Volkstrauertag to honor victims of war
Several German towns, including Burgwedel and Roth, are holding memorial services and wreath-laying ceremonies to observe Volkstrauertag on November 15, 2026. The day serves to remember the victims of war and tyranny while promoting peace, democracy, and human dignity.
In Burgwedel, events are scheduled across seven local districts, including Engensen, Fuhrberg, and Großburgwedel, featuring church services and memorial walks. Mayor Ortrud Wendt emphasized that wars destroy more than just infrastructure, noting that they tear families apart and leave lasting generational wounds.
The city of Roth is hosting eight simultaneous events, with a central ceremony at the Ehrenfriedhof involving the mayor, church representatives, and the Bundeswehr. Mayor Andreas Buckreus stated that the occasion is particularly significant in a time when conflicts are increasingly prominent in public consciousness, calling for responsibility toward tolerance and freedom.
