German municipalities prepare for winter service season
Several German cities, including Neumarkt and Memmingen, have completed preparations for the upcoming winter season to ensure road and path safety during snow and ice.
In Neumarkt, officials have fully stocked salt and grit warehouses despite nationwide supply delays caused by late orders and low water levels in the Danube. The city maintains approximately 2,000 tons of salt and 500 tons of grit to clear 350 kilometers of roads and cycling paths. Priority is given to main traffic arteries and dangerous sections, with a specific focus on keeping cycling paths clear to promote alternative transport.
Memmingen has also mobilized its winter service operations, which run from November 1 to March 31. The city has prepared 750 tons of salt and 12,000 liters of brine, supported by 50 clearing vehicles and 90 employees. The operation includes motorized road wardens who monitor critical areas starting at 3:00 a.m. to detect frost or ice. Clearing efforts prioritize hospital routes, fire station access, and school bus lines, with the goal of having main roads cleared by 6:30 a.m. and pedestrian paths by 7:00 a.m.
