German municipalities raise parking fees amid budget shortfalls
The municipal utility Meininger Stadtwerke announced that, from 1 October, its parking tariffs will increase by up to 80 percent, raising the monthly rate for a space on the Steingraben from €25 to €45 and applying higher charges to caravan spots. The company cited rising operating, maintenance and upkeep costs as the reason for the adjustment.
The price hikes are part of a wider trend across German cities, where local authorities are raising fees for parking, sewage and waste collection to address chronic budget deficits that total more than €30 billion nationwide. Examples include a resident parking permit in Bonn that was set at €360 before being reduced to €120 for the next year, and varied rates in Munich, Berlin, Leipzig, Stuttgart, Hamburg and other cities. Officials such as Christian Schuchardt, head of the German Cities Association, argue that expanding revenue sources is necessary to keep municipal services running.
