German municipalities weigh retail and data center developments
Local governments in Germany are evaluating significant commercial and infrastructure developments. In Achim, the city council is set to vote on October 29 regarding a proposed Lidl supermarket reconstruction on Bremer Straße. The council will decide whether to require the discount retailer to include residential housing units as part of the new construction project.
In Obertshausen, the city assembly has approved an open-ended investigation into the possibility of establishing an Amazon Web Services (AWS) data center. The project would be located on the former YMOS AG industrial site, which has remained unused for nearly 25 years. The potential facility could require up to 100 megawatts of power. While several political factions support the investigation, the Green Party has opposed the proposal.
