German museums document historical artifacts and colonial-era packaging
Museum archives in Germany have released detailed descriptions of historical artifacts, including a soap box and textile samples.
The Freilichtmuseum Roscheider Hof documented a soap box used to hold DMC embroidery thread. The packaging, produced by F. Wolff & Sohn, features a lithograph depicting a white boy showing soap to a child with stereotyped indigenous features. The description notes that the imagery reflects colonial thought patterns and generalized cultural depictions common in the early 20th century.
Additionally, the Deutsches Damast- und Frottiermuseum provided details on terry cloth samples manufactured by VEB Frottana in Oberoderwitz during the 1980s. The cotton towels feature geometric checkered patterns in various color combinations. The documentation highlights the use of specific production abbreviations, such as 'TStck' for thousand pieces, which were standard in the GDR's planned economy.
