German mushroom market faces declining button mushroom consumption

The German mushroom market is facing challenges, particularly regarding button mushrooms, which are losing market reach. While domestic production remains largely stable, market researcher Michael Koch of AMI reported at the BDC annual meeting that inflation and a tendency to save are impacting the consumption of conventional edible mushrooms.

While higher market prices driven by inflation have temporarily offset declining volumes in terms of revenue, the long-term outlook is concerning. Data shows a decline in the proportion of households purchasing cultivated mushrooms, though organic button mushrooms are seeing a slight upward trend. A specific challenge identified is the declining importance of mushrooms among consumers under the age of 29, suggesting a need for targeted activation of this demographic.
