German music festivals face funding cuts and financial losses

Music festivals in Germany are facing financial uncertainty due to funding cuts and operational losses.

At the Reeperbahn Festival, director Detlef Schwarte expressed concern over a proposal to reduce federal cultural funding from approximately 6.275 million euros to 3 million euros starting in 2027. While the festival anticipates some level of uncertainty, the scale of the proposed reduction is significant. The festival's current theme, ‘Forever Legit?’, explores the evolving role of the music industry and the participation of younger generations.

Separately, the organizer of the Bassum Open Air, Oliver Launer, reported that despite attracting 16,000 visitors in 2026 and hosting high-profile artists like Johannes Oerding and Foreigner, the event is currently operating at a loss. Launer criticized the city of Bassum for providing no financial support, warning that the long-term viability of the festival is at risk if current trends continue.
