German national receives diversion for sabotaging Herbert Kickl's climbing route
A 26-year-old German national has avoided a formal conviction after agreeing to a diversion in an Austrian court for sabotaging a climbing route used by FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl. The individual admitted to theft and property damage at the Hochschwab in Styria, where he used an angle grinder to remove several expansion bolts and took various climbing hardware.
An anonymous confession posted on the left-wing platform Indymedia titled ‘Take Back The Peaks’ claimed the act was intended to ‘hunt fascists out of the mountains,’ alleging that right-wing figures attempt to romanticize the mountains to create a perceived national identity. While the Alpine Police noted the sabotage could have massively endangered subsequent climbers, some mountaineering experts suggested that missing bolts are often visible and may hinder rather than immediately endanger life.
As part of the diversion agreement at the Bruck an der Mur District Court, the defendant must complete 120 hours of community service—potentially with an Alpine club—and pay a 100-euro fee. The legal proceedings are suspended pending the fulfillment of these conditions.
