German Navy introduces Biber watercraft for port security
The German Navy has unveiled a new small, agile watercraft nicknamed ‘Biber’ (Beaver) to enhance the protection of maritime infrastructure and warships. Officially named the ‘Maritime Interdiction Security Safety Craft’ (MISC), the approximately four-meter-long vehicle resembles a jet ski and is designed to respond quickly to threats in the immediate vicinity of naval bases and vessels.
A total of ten units have been procured, with three vehicles each assigned to the naval bases in Wilhelmshaven, Neustadt in Holstein, and Warnemünde. The craft can reach speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour and is equipped with blue lights, though it is unarmed.
In addition to security patrols, the vehicles feature a ‘Rescue Board’ for human rescue operations. According to Commander Sebastian Uhle, the craft will allow personnel to effectively manage unauthorized vessels, such as water sports enthusiasts or yachts, that approach military assets like frigates.
