German Navy leadership change: Abry to succeed Kaack

On September 30, 2026, the German Navy will undergo a change in leadership at the Marineschule Mürwik in Flensburg. General Carsten Breuer, the Inspector General of the Bundeswehr, will oversee the handover of command from Vice Admiral Jan Christian Kaack to Rear Admiral Wilhelm Tobias Abry.

Vice Admiral Kaack has led the Navy since March 2022. His tenure was characterized by the ‘Kurs Marine’ strategic realignment, focusing on national and alliance defense, technological innovation, and the integration of unmanned systems to enhance international operational readiness.

Rear Admiral Abry, who joined the Navy in 1988, brings extensive sea and international leadership experience. His previous roles include commanding the fast attack craft ‘Puma’ and the frigate ‘Niedersachsen’, serving as commander of the Marineschule Mürwik, and holding positions within the Federal Ministry of Defence and NATO. His operational background includes participation in Enduring Freedom and the EU mission Atalanta.
