German Navy Secures Four New MEKO A-200 Frigates
Germany's Budget Committee approved the procurement of four MEKO A‑200 DEU‑class frigates for the German Navy, with an option for additional vessels. The contract, the largest surface‑ship deal in ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) history, allows the first ship to be delivered as early as 2029.
The new frigates will enhance the navy’s anti‑submarine capabilities and support core fleet missions. TKMS CEO Oliver Burkhard said the approval underscores the importance of strong maritime capabilities for national and alliance defence and noted the need for rapid construction given the security situation. The decision also provides planning certainty for TKMS, whose order book has risen to €20.6 billion.
TKMS, part of the ThyssenKrupp group, designs and builds naval vessels, submarines and related systems at shipyards in Germany and Brazil. The procurement aligns with Germany’s broader increase in defence spending across Europe.
