German Navy warns of Russian aggression and shadow fleet in Baltic Sea FAST-MOVING
German Navy Inspector Jan Christian Kaack has warned of a constant and high level of Russian aggression in the Baltic Sea. According to the Vice Admiral, Russian activities include spying on military units and bases, intimidation, sabotage attempts, and drone overflights.
Kaack highlighted the increasing use of a Russian “shadow fleet”—tankers and cargo ships used to bypass Western oil price caps. He noted that Russia is now protecting these vessels with weapons, utilizing either naval ships or security teams stationed directly on board. This protection is reportedly placing an additional strain on Russia's limited naval resources.
Despite these threats, Kaack reported that Germany and its allies have significantly improved their maritime situational awareness. By integrating data from ships, aircraft, coastal radar, and satellites, the time required to detect maritime irregularities has been reduced from 17 hours to just one hour.
