German NGOs pledge aid for Sudan and Congo humanitarian crises

The Evangelische Kirche von Kurhessen‑Waldeck (EKKW) announced a donation of €25,000 to support the Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe’s work in Sudan, where hundreds of thousands of people in El‑Obeid face severe water and food shortages amid ongoing conflict. Dr. Diethelm Meißner, EKKW’s head of diakonie and ecumenism, highlighted the worsening situation as aid convoys are repeatedly attacked.

Caritas international reported that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has spread to five provinces, with more than 3,600 infections and 1,587 deaths. Volker Gerdesmeier, head of Caritas’s Africa department, said the organization is providing an additional €70,000 for emergency response, including protective equipment for health‑center staff, to help contain the epidemic and save lives.
