German nursing groups demand representation and affordability in care reforms
German nursing associations and social organizations are calling for significant reforms and better representation within the newly established Nursing Structure Commission (Pflegestrukturkommission).
Several federations, including wir pflegen e. V., Pflegende Angehörige e. V., and the Deutsche Alzheimer Gesellschaft e. V., have requested that family caregivers be granted a formal seat and voice on the commission. They have nominated social scientist Prof. Dr. Notburga Ott to represent this group, noting that approximately 88 percent of people requiring care in Germany are supported at home by relatives. Advocates argue that current commission compositions lack organized representation for these essential caregivers.
Simultaneously, the AWO Schwaben has appealed to lawmakers to ensure that nursing reforms prioritize affordability and solidarity. Concerns have been raised regarding government drafts that may omit planned increases in nursing benefits for 2028, a move estimated to save the long-term care insurance system 4.7 billion euros. Organizations warn that rising costs could force long-term workers to rely on social assistance and emphasize the need for the community to support those in need of care.
