German open-air museums showcase traditional historical crafts
Open-air museums in Germany are hosting events to showcase and preserve traditional historical crafts.
At the Freilichtmuseum Perschen, visitors observed the ancient art of threshing. Museum farmers demonstrated the use of the “Flegel” (flail) to separate grain from sheaves, providing an immersive look at historical agricultural techniques.
Similarly, the Freilichtmuseum Amerang in Upper Bavaria hosted a craft day featuring over 20 artisans. The event included demonstrations of blacksmithing, carpentry, woodturning, and paving. A major highlight was a historical threshing demonstration by the Ameranger Bulldog Friends, showcasing how grain was processed using vintage machinery. The museum also offered interactive workshops for children, including fabric printing, rope making, and small-scale woodworking.
