German Order of St. Mary traces historical legacy in Germany

The historical influence of the Teutonic Order, formally known as the Order of Brothers of the German Hospital of Saint Mary in Jerusalem, remains visible across various German regions. In the Donau-Ries district, the Order's presence is marked by municipal coats of arms, such as in Megesheim, and symbols found in cities like Donauwörth, Nördlingen, and Oettingen.

In Siersdorf, the Order's legacy is tied to the Herrenhaus, a Renaissance-style manor house built in 1578. The site's history dates back to 1219, when Count Wilhelm III of Jülich donated the local church to the Order. Following the dissolution of the Order by Napoleon in 1809, the commandery transitioned into a home for army veterans before eventually passing to Prussian ownership in 1814.
