Karlsruhe Primary School Feces Cleanup Sparks Outrage

During a class excursion to a "forest classroom" in Karlsruhe, a young student defecated in a toilet and did not identify themselves. The teacher instructed all boys in the class, aged six to seven, to clean the mess with a piece of toilet paper each, washing their hands afterward. The incident has provoked nationwide condemnation.

The Karlsruhe Regional Council, acting as school supervisory authority, confirmed the episode and criticised the teacher’s actions, stating that the children “were made to wash their hands thoroughly.” A formal disciplinary complaint has been filed against the teacher. Psychologist Elfriede Schweinzer, head of a child‑advice centre, called the measure a humiliating collective punishment, saying, “Anyone who hears about this should be shocked.” The episode has sparked debate over child protection and pedagogical standards in German schools.
