Germany wins Over-80 Football World Cup in Australia

The German national over-80 football team has won the inaugural Over-80 World Cup held in Cleveland, Australia. In the final, the German squad defeated the USA with a 2-0 victory on a small-sided pitch.

To secure the title, the team had to compete in two matches on the same day, progressing from the group stages through the semi-finals to the final. A key moment in their campaign was a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Japan during the preliminary round. Michael Rätsch of Hertha BSC, who scored the winning goal against Japan, noted that despite the heat and sunburn, the team remained focused on using tactical discipline to succeed.

Beyond the competition, the players emphasized the importance of promoting physical activity among the elderly. Plans are already being discussed for a European Championship and various international matches for senior players in the coming year.
